As a proud plant-based manufacturer with an emphasis on organic and non-GMO ingredient sourcing, we boast a reduced-footprint operation compared to conventional food manufacturers. We are a customer driven organization catering to special diets and allergies while focusing on sustainable agriculture and the green food industry.  Areas of focus are Nut-free, Gluten-free & Sugar-free products.

 

In this role, you will assist in charting the future direction of the company and work directly with management and clients in the development of cutting edge baked goods and treats.  Helping identify future food trends, this position has a heavy research focus and is very hands on.

 

The R&D Technologist role is fast paced, involves a high degree of research, trials and organizational skills and is one of the best launching pads for a career in our company!

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Identify, source & manage R&D ingredients
  • Develop new formulations and make improvements to existing products
  • Assist in designing and executing benchtop trials, and analyzing data to make sound technical recommendations
  • Scale benchtop trials up to production batches
  • Participate in plant trials & first production runs
  • Support Operations and QA to resolve ingredient, formula and process issues
  • Support Sales with project timelines & sales
  • Manage product specifications
  • Investigate, report and make recommendations on technical issues
  • Improve product quality through on-going review of formulation and process parameters
  • Perform shelf life studies
  • Coordinate with multiple departments to ensure ERP accuracy for products
  • Ensure timelines are met or exceeded and customer specifications are followed

 

Education and Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Food Science / Food Engineering / Food Nutrition or related Science (e.g. Food Chemistry, Microbiology, etc.)
  • 3+ years experience in food manufacturing/product development/ experience in a related role such as Research and Development or Food Scientist. Commercial bakery experience is an asset.
  • Experience with leading new products through testing, trialing and commercialization within a high volume food manufacturing environment
  • Exceptional sensory skills
  • Strong baking, technical, and food science background
  • Resourceful and strong trouble shooting skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Working knowledge of Canadian and US food standards and regulations.
  • Strong bench work skills with the ability to execute solutions rapidly.
  • Self directed individual with initiative, motivation and positive attitude
  • Be able to work unsupervised and at times, independently and able to delve into new areas outside of one’s comfort level
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to represent the company and project team in a professional manner

The R&D Technologist position is a full-time, permanent role working Monday through Friday at our North York (Keele & Steeles) location. **Free parking and close to York University Subway Station**
